ABSTRACT : Through the analysis of the exhibition catalogue Partage d’Exotismes from the Lyon Biennale (2000), this article will highlight both the content of the social representations conveyed by the exhibition catalogue and the means by which they are conveyed to the reader. The choice of the catalogue echoes the paper by Fanchon Deflaux, who analysed in 2004 the construction of the representations of “non-Western” art and artists in the press, following this edition of the Biennale. Her study had brought to light a number of elements relating to the social representation of non-Western works and artists that I wish to confront here with the discourse put forward by the exhibition curators. The study of the catalogues as communication and media objects will notably enable me to determine whether there is a coherence in the construction processes of the representations of the works and the artists.
