ABSTRACT : In contemporary museums, architecture often plays a major role: often designed by so-called star architects, their buildings have acquired a very strong symbolic value in relation to the places where they have been built. From the outside, they often create a discontinuity with urban sedimentation as they represent the “new.” Inside however, they offer visitors an experience of the space and the artworks displayed that is much freer yet sensorially denser than ever before. I refer here to two museums recently built in Rome: the Ara Pacis and the MAXXI, which are considered to be two very different but comparable spatial devices, dominating the visitor’s attention and body while using each exhibition to initiate an often unprecedented dialogue between the arts.
