Apprendre l’histoire à Auschwitz : l’expérience d’une histoire écrite avec des objets

ABSTRACT : When students, who went on a school trip to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum talk about their visit, they first claim that they have “learned something.” This assertion may seem paradoxical as they also admit, to not having had any acknowledge of the history of the Shoah in general and of this camp in particular. To understand this we must ask ourselves what they mean when they use the verb “to learn.” It does not refer to the integration of information that is provided to them in a discursive or conceptual manner, as in a book or during a history lesson. Students learn information in a sensible way that has a sensible form through feeling and imagination. They do not learn how Auschwitz actually was but they experience its incarnation.
