ABSTRACT : The exhibition is considered here as a practice that exalts the mediating dimension of the meaning, as long as it provides an environment that is either material (sensible) or immaterial (discursive) for the artwork. In the theoretical framework I put forward, there are at least three subspaces of the relationship created by the exhibition (based on proximity, movement and critical abstraction). These analytical stages are tested by certain recent developments in contemporary arts. The conceptualization of the spectacularization and dramatization strategies in particular is developed in order to provide an interpretation of two exhibition solutions: the collaboration between the Brera Academy in Milan and the director Ermanno Olmi to enhance the collocation of two paintings by Mantegna and Bellini, and the work/installation Skulls by Lazzerini. The two examples are complementary, as they reverse the relationship between stratified dramatization and spectacularization strategies.
