Abstract : The aim of this article is to question the debate on computer-generated renderings in architecture as representative of internal contradictions within the architectural discipline. The architectural discipline has gone under substantial theoretical transformation: it is said that the otherness of “inhabited environments” takes priority over the functionalist “monotheism” of the modern architecture, changing the status of the architect from the “designer of life” into an attentive analyst of contexts. As a privileged means of architectural communication, computer-generated rendering would crystallize the difficulties of thinking that the affirmation of autonomy by a radical contextualism or by a self-constitution would make it possible to go beyond the old postmodern debate about the autonomy of the architectural form.
