For a sensitive reading of the city: The impact of social context in the socio-cognitive Representation of the city

Monia BOUSNINA

ABSTRACT : To understand how the city is perceived by its inhabitants requires the interpretation of its socio-spatial representations by its users. In this approach, the urban object is studied in its multiple dimensions including its social, historical, cognitive, affective, semantic and symbolic correlates. When the city is apprehended as a socially produced and lived space, the places turn into places borrowed from individual and collective stories. In fact, the urban field is not anymore considered as a neutral space, but a socially and ideologically marked space of representation. The territory, becomes a support of social exchanges, in its capacity to print the memories and the symbols, it allows the social interactions and becomes material for communication between the individuals. This contribution addresses the existing dialectic between user, space and representation. By using this approach in a study of the city, the author wants to show the existence of a collective socio-cognitive representation of space and to bring it into light.
